WAN (Wide Area Network) :-  A widely dispersed geographical network formed by
linking several computers or local area networks (LANs) together over long
distances by such things as phone lines.

Warm Boot  :-  To reload your operating system by pressing <Alt><Ctrl><Del> or
pressing the reset button on your CPU case.

Web Browser :-  A program that can retrieve and format HTML documents from Web
servers using the HTTP protocol for display.

Web Server :-  A program that understands the HTTP protocol and responds to
resource requests from Web browsers using that protocol.

Wildcards :- Characters that stand for one or more characters of a filename.  
Wildcards allow the operating system to carry out a command on many files at once.  
A question mark (?) stands for any single character and an asterisk (*) stands for any
group of characters.

WIN.INI file :-  A Windows initialization file that contains settings you can use to
customize your Windows environment. It can be edited manually, but this should only
be attempted if you know what you are doing.

Window  :-  A rectangular area on your screen used to view a particular document or
application.

Windows File Manager  :-  The Windows 3.1 program which allows you to organize
your files and directories, move and copy files, start applications, print documents,
and maintain disks.

Windows 3.1 :-  A multi-session graphical user interface (GUI) designed by Microsoft
requiring DOS to run.  This graphical user interface enables users to select
commands by pointing to illustrations or symbols displayed in a rectangular area on
the computer screen with a mouse or other pointing device.

Windows 95/98  :-  A multitasking, multithreading, 32-Bit operating system designed
by Microsoft.

Windows NT :-  An operating system developed by Microsoft designed to provide
networking services and to be at least somewhat processor independent.

Word Processor  :-  A computer system or program for the setting, editing, revising,
correcting, storing, and printing of text.

Word Wrap :-  A feature that moves text from the end of a line to the beginning of a
new line as you type. With word wrap you do not need to press ENTER at the end of
each line in a paragraph.

Workgroup :-  A group of users in a multiuser environment who share data and the
same workgroup information file.

Workspace :-  The area of a window that displays the information contained in the
application or document you are working with.

Workstation :-  A computer in a Local Area Network (LAN) that does not share its
resources, but, uses the resources of other computers (servers).

WORM :-  Write Once, Read Many.

WWW (World-Wide Web) :-  A collection of formatted hypertext pages located on
computers around the world and linked together by the Internet.

WYSIWYG  :-  What You See Is What You Get.  The exact text format you see
displayed on the screen is what you get on paper if you send it to the printer.

XMS (Extended Memory Specification)  :-  A memory allocation scheme that allows
real-mode programs to use extended memory (memory above 1MB).

ZIP :-  File extension used for PC files compressed with the software "PKZIP," written
and distributed by PKWARE, Inc., and one of the most popular compressions used
for PC files transferred on-line.
